GFN Coalition Battles to Save Black Lives Fighting Against Menthol in Tobacco Products

The founder of GFN is James Spight Jr, D. Min. Pastor Spight is the Pastor of Gospel Fire COGIC a member of Headquarters Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction. He is taking on initiatives that would destroy the black family if not addressed. Pastor Spight is bringing a voice to issues that negatively impact all black families. He helps to find solutions that will permanently solve problems that would tear black families to pieces.

On July 19th 2023, in Memphis TN – Gospel Fire Network (GFN) coalition invited The Center for Black Health and Equity to speak to the GFN coalition and Methodist LeBonhuer Healthcare Community Partnership Committee. Dr. Gregory Bolden and Kenneth Ray made a stunning presentation on the dangers to the Black community on the use of menthol in tobacco products. This was the first meeting of the newly organized GFN coalition dealing with the dangers of mixing tobacco and menthol together. The leading health disparities that are created by mentholated tobacco products are heart failure and cancer. These health disparities are ranked as the number one and number two causes of the death to black people from coast to coast across the United States. Nearly 40,000 deaths are contributed to using tobacco products in the Black community in the United States every year. The GFN coalition is seeking to end the use of the dangerous menthol additives in all tobacco products. This will increase the health equity of blacks that live in our country, making it easier for them to quit smoking.
